Welcome to my new blog, SustainablyInvested.com!
What is Sustainably Invested? My plan is to discuss sustainability and investments. This will include sustainable investing, that is, how to build an investment portfolio that takes sustainability into account. I will look at this from the perspective of the individual investor, how can one build a portfolio of investments that takes sustainability into account? Also, from the perspective of an investment advisory firm, how can an investment advisory firm add sustainability to their investment process? While investors want to see their investments grow to fund retirement or achieve their financial goals, they also want to support companies that make a positive impact on our world.
Investing is important, but I will also look personal investments in sustainability. How can we be more sustainable in our daily lives? What is your carbon footprint? How can we live a more sustainable life? How can we minimize our impact? Everything we do has an impact on our environment and future generations. We must minimize this impact and live more sustainable lives to maintain our plant for future generations.
So, you might be wondering, what makes this guy qualified to discuss sustainability and investments? Hey, its a blog, do I really need qualifications? Kidding aside, I have worked in the investment industry for 20 years now. I have been an investment analyst, researching stocks in multiple industries for nearly 14 years, after becoming a CFA Charterholder in 2000. So I do understand investing and the investment process. How am I qualified to talk about sustainability? I am currently enrolled in the MBA program at Seattle University. Seattle University offers a number of specializations for its MBA students, one of which is a specialization in Sustainable Business. I have enrolled in and completed all of the required courses for the Sustainable Business specialization. So, this blog mixes my investment experience with my educational experience. I don’t know if that makes me qualified, but at least it shows my base of knowledge and experience.
Why am I writing this blog? Really it is for myself, though I thought it my be of interest to others. I work for an investment firm and would like to see sustainability added to our investment process, so I plan to research ways to do that. I would also like to make my own portfolio more sustainable, so I will also look for ways individuals can make their own portfolios more sustainable. I would also like to find ways to live a more sustainable life. I have an interest in doing some teaching and/or consulting at some point in the future. This will help to build my knowledge base. While this benefits me, I others might benefit from my research and insights as well.
So, this is the first post in my blog and my the start of a journey. More to come…
